In Spain we know it as Hummingbird Sphinx. It is a species of hawk moth in the Sphingidae family and lives in southern Europe.
Although in Spain we do not have hummingbirds, the large size of this insect and its behavior gives it a certain resemblance to that bird, hence the name.
It is a wonder to observe it in the air, its characteristic buzz when flying and the speed with which it does so.
Its life cycle is long and also its great capacity to migrate and hibernate differentiates it from the very short life cycles of other butterflies.
I love this moth – well captured. The first time I saw it was in Spain (!) and i didn’t have a clue what it was. It is a fantastic little creature, and I now once had it in my garden some years ago.

It does not have the beauty of butterflies, but its flight is spectacular. Thank you 😘
