Symmetry

El árbol fotógrafo

Even my shadow looks for symmetry, hiding behind a tree. She knows I’ll take the picture.

The challenge launched by Patti this week, it’s very interesting. I admit that I really like to make things square and symmetry is perfect for that.

Let’s start with a question:

What is symmetry?

«I would say that symmetry represents order, and we long for order in this strange universe in which we find ourselves».

Alan Lightman

And if we look for it in a dictionary:

“Exact correspondence in form, size and position of the parts of a whole in relation to a center, an axis or a plane”

And what does psychology say?

Psychology of the Gestalt have shown that the human being shows a preference for perfectly symmetrical objects. Symmetry brings harmony and order to our brain.

All right, now, let’s see the pictures.

Triangulo

Geometric shapes are a motif in itself and can function as a center of interest.

Avena

This simple ear of oats was reflected on the screen of the mobile. Simetria (almost) Natural.

El 1WTC entre líneas

The lines are very useful to guide the look.

El patico y la flecha

The human (and/or animal) element naturally adds interest to photography and in compositions as formal as symmetrical, can help us convey something more.

Patterns can give a lot of play in symmetrical photography and can help you add rhythm to images, and make them formally more appealing.

  1. What a wonderful collection, Ana! I love them all! It’s impossible to pick a favorite. But the duck and the oats keep circling in my mind…Great examples of symmetry.

  2. Absolutely glorious examples Ana – one of my favorite of your posts which are always wonderful. Those oats are perfection and I loved your closing colors. Terrific response to the challenge.

  3. As I scrolled through your photos, I was thinking of which would be my favorite, but now I can’t pick one. I’m fascinated by the second one because that building and the angle at which you took the picture is marvelous. But I also love the plant and the duck. Good eyes you have, my dear!
